YMLSF 2025 Election: Electoral Committee gives update.
The Electoral Committee Chairman MLS Uwagbai Isioma has issued a statement on the just concluded election of the Young Medical Laboratory Scientists’ Forum (YMLSF) particularly on why the Committee is yet to conclude with the position of the Secretary.

”Preliminary Report on YMLSF 2025 National Election
I wish to sincerely appreciate all Young Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria who participated in this year’s Annual Summit and Election. It was indeed a long night dedicated to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.
Special appreciation also goes to members of the Electoral Committee for their time, dedication, and resilience in delivering a free and fair election.
The electoral process commenced at approximately 5:00 pm on 23rd August 2025, with strict adherence to the electoral guidelines and criteria for voter eligibility as stated in the YMLSF by-law/constitution.
The Electoral Committee comprised seven members, five of whom were directly involved in voter accreditation and issuing ballot papers. All aspirants’ agents were positioned behind the Electoral Committee to monitor and guide proceedings, ensuring transparency at every stage. The entire election process was live-streamed via Zoom and YouTube for colleagues and elders to follow in real-time.
Accreditation Process:
We verified the following from voters:
Current practicing license (or valid provisional license)
Evidence of summit registration and payment of dues (2024 & 2025)
A valid national ID
Some participants whose names were not found on the registration list but provided evidence of payment were manually accredited and documented separately, with all agents in agreement.
Interns with expired provisional licenses were denied voting rights, in line with electoral guidelines mandating a valid license. However, a payment window via Remita was opened, allowing many to renew their status and return to vote.
Accreditation involved a stepwise process 4 Eleco members
1. Confirmation of license and documentation
2. Verification of financial status
3. Issuance of ballot papers
4. Finger-marking with ink
This entire process was closely monitored and streamed live until early hours of 24th August, though media gadgets occasionally overheated and required brief pauses.
Election Observation
We were honored by the presence of senior AMLSN representatives (National Secretary and National Welfare Officer) and Dr. Biodun Ogunniyi, a respected mentor of YMLSF, who observed proceedings and provided guidance to ensure fairness and transparency.
Voting concluded around 5:00 am on 24th August. After multiple counts, 478 accredited voters were recorded. However, during sorting and counting, discrepancies arose:
Secretary Position
MLS Stephanie: 247 votes
MLS Dodowa: 240 votes
Invalid votes: 5
Total votes counted: 492 (14 more than accredited voters)
A proposal to deduct 7 votes from each aspirant (to balance the excess) was declined by both candidates. Further recounts confirmed 480 accredited voters. With a 12-vote discrepancy exceeding the winning margin (7 votes), the Electoral Committee, after consultations with national observers and BOT, resolved to step down the Secretary election results for further review and deliberation.

Presidential Position
A similar situation occurred, but due to a significantly larger margin, the result was accepted and resolved.
Identified Gaps and Observations
The discrepancies likely stemmed from the manual verification of multiple documents, especially practicing licenses.
Several voters had to renew expired licenses mid-process, adding complexity and occasional disorder.
From our assessment, no voter received more than one ballot paper, as ballot distribution was closely monitored in full view of aspirants’ agents.
A root cause analysis is ongoing, and updates will be shared with distinguished colleagues as findings emerge.
Conclusion
Despite the challenges, the Electoral Committee worked diligently to ensure a transparent, fair, and credible election process. Congratulations to all newly elected executives.
