Akwa Ibom State Branch of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has suspended the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) Chapter Chairman Mrs. Ekaette Akpan, for a period of three months with immediate effect.
The decision was contained in a suspension letter dated 10th March 2026 and signed by members of the Akwa Ibom State Branch Executives. According to the statement, the action followed deliberations at an executive meeting held on 22nd February 2026 at the AMLSN State Secretariat.
The executive noted that the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the AMLSN Constitution, which empowers the State Branch to exercise supervisory and disciplinary authority over its chapters where the conduct of an officer is considered inconsistent with the association’s aims, objectives, and constitutional provisions.
The letter stated that the suspension was prompted by what it described as the chairman’s alleged disregard for constitutional provisions relating to the payment of dues and other levies. The action was said to be based on violations of the following provisions:
- Article 14 (VIII) of the AMLSN Constitution 2018 (as amended)
- Article 12 (II) and (III) of the Uniform Bye-Laws for Branches and Chapters
- Schedules XI and XII of the AMLSN Administrative and Operational Guidelines
As part of the disciplinary measures, Mrs. Akpan has been directed to immediately cease functioning in any capacity as Chairman of the UUTH Chapter. She is also required to hand over all official documents, financial records, properties, and other materials belonging to the association to the Chapter Vice Chairman within 48 hours of receiving the letter.
The statement further directed her to make herself available to the disciplinary committee for any investigative proceedings related to the matter.
In addition, she is to be removed from all AMLSN communication platforms and other related bodies, including the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP).
Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman of the UUTH Chapter has been mandated to convene a general assembly meeting within 72 hours to brief members of the chapter and to assume the full responsibilities of the office of the chairman during the period of suspension.
The State Branch emphasized that the action was taken to uphold discipline, transparency, and strict adherence to the constitutional provisions guiding the operations of the association.
