The conversation over Direct Entry (DE) into the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) programme for Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) has resurfaced.
The conversation was started by a concerned social media user on X (formerly Twitter) who commented on the post by the Medical Laboratory Science of Nigeria following the Acting Registrar/CEO Dr. Donald. I. Ofili recent meeting with the Heads of Departments and Coordinators of Medical Laboratory Technology in Schools and Colleges of Health Technology across Nigeria.

The user directed a public enquiry to the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), seeking clarity on a matter that has lingered for years.
According to the user, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) discontinued the MLT direct entry pathway almost four years ago and this shift closed the door for graduates of the Medical Laboratory Technology programme (run in Colleges of Health Technology) who hoped to transition directly into the BMLS programme in Nigerian universities.

Please, we haven’t heard any update about MLT Direct Entry. It’s been almost 4 years now since JAMB stopped DE for MLT, and nothing has been done. Kindly let us know if there is still hope for Direct Entry.

This has stalled career advancement, disrupted academic plans, and left hundreds of qualified technicians in limbo.
The Direct Entry option provides a vital bridge for MLTs to upgrade their qualifications to a degree level without starting from scratch. This not only benefits the individuals but also strengthens the country’s healthcare workforce by ensuring that trained professionals can advance into leadership and specialized roles.
